Mediprene Mass Balance TPE

Mediprene Mass Balance Thermoplastic Elastomers are medical TPE materials with bio-attributed content according to the mass balance principle.

They were developed to enable the shift away from fossil resources and support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, while ensuring the quality, properties and regulatory status remain the same.

Mediprene Mass Balance TPE

What is Mass Balance?

Mass balance allows for a gradual increase of the bio share using existing infrastructure with the target to reduce the use of fossil resources step by step. It is an approach to account for materials entering and leaving a system.

The Mass Balance Approach for Polymer Compounding

Mass Balance for Medical TPE Materials

We identified mass balance as a good option for our medical customers as the resulting TPE material is a drop-in solution with identical properties. This is because monomers from renewable sources, but with the same quality and purity as those of fossil origin, are used to make bio-circular polymers (through mass balance).

We can replace the fossil polymers in our Mediprene TPE compounds with the bio-attributed mass-balanced version to create a 1:1 replacement. The technical properties, chemical composition, and regulatory status of the mass balance TPE will be the same as the corresponding fossil-based material.

Why Mass Balance?

  • Enabling a gradual shift from virgin and fossil feedstocks.
  • No need for investments in new equipment and processes since it is a drop-in solution.
  • ISCC Plus certification through the value chain guarantees transparency and accuracy.
  • Allows for the use of 2nd generation feedstocks for high quality polymers.

Why Mass Balance for Medical Applications?

  • It will be a drop in solution.
  • The technical properties, chemical composition and regulatory status of the compound will be the same as for the corresponding fossil grade.
  • With this approach a contribution can be made towards a more sustainable medical device.

Certification

Third-party verification is required to audit the mass balance allocation and allow for correct product labelling. Our Swedish site was among the first TPE compounders to achieve the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS).

ISCC PLUS is a global certification scheme providing traceability along the supply chain and guarantees correct and transparent use of the mass balance approach. Certified companies must meet specific environmental and social standards, creating a chain of custody.

Product Carbon Footprint

HEXPOL TPE can provide cradle-to-gate Product Carbon Footprints (PCF) to further inform customers. HEXPOL TPE’s PCF methodology is built upon the principles of ISO 14067:2018 for the carbon footprint of products, which is associated with the principles and requirements of  ISO standards 14040:2006 and 14044:2006 for life cycle assessment. The PCF provides CO2 equivalent data per kg of TPE, calculated from raw materials and their transportation, product manufacturing and packaging.

Materials + Applications

Mass balance versions of our Mediprene 500M standard TPE series are available, as well as customised grades. Typical applications include airway management, face masks, resealable membranes, IV systems, seals and connectors.

Dryflex TPE for Impact Modification https://www.hexpol.com/tpe/product-brands/dryflex-tpe-impact-modification/ Thu, 11 Jun 2020 08:21:59 +0000 https://www.hexpol.com/tpe/?post_type=product-brands&p=4661

TPE for Impact Modification

With an ever increasing refuse stream, Government waste prevention programmes and new industry targets, the demand for products made from recycled materials is rising, meaning that recyclability is becoming an increasingly important attribute for polymers. However, thermomechanical degradation from the repeated melting during the recycling process, weathering and contamination can all have negative effects on properties and performance.

Dryflex TPE impact modifiers can be added to the recyclate, helping to transform the properties from stiff and brittle to flexible and tough and improve the impact resistance and aesthetics of the finished product. Dryflex TPE compounds are being used as impact modifiers in both primary and secondary recyclate supply streams.

Dryflex TPEs for Impact Modification

Compatibilisation

Dryflex TPE impact modifiers can also function as a compatibiliser when used with commingled sources of non-polar polymers such as PP, PE and PS. When added to an immiscible polymer blend, the TPE modifies interfacial properties and stabilises the morphology, creating a polymer alloy and improving dispersion and processing characteristics.

Improved Processing

Depending on the purity of the recycled polymer feedstock, the addition of Dryflex TPE impact modifiers can also help to improve melt viscosity, aiding processing and cycle times. In comparison to pure PS, with the addition of Dryflex TPE impact modifiers, we have also seen an improvement in the ease of de-moulding parts.

TPE Compounds vs SBS

In the past we have seen a rather inconsistent approach to impact modification, where any available compounds or polymers are thrown into the recyclate mix. This can lead to inconsistencies and unpredictable results. With our Dryflex TPE impact modifier grades we have adopted a more qualified approach.

We have tested many different formulations with both virgin and recycled polymer for impact strength and have also compared these results against data collated from common materials used in the industry such as pure SBS. The Dryflex TPE impact modifier grades help to increase the value, processability and potential applications for recovered PP and PS.

Addition levels

Depending on the desired performance levels, Dryflex TPE impact modifier grades can be added at a suggested loading weight between 5 and 25%.
There can be significant gains in impact resistance at a moderate level of modifier addition. For example, in a grade of PS regrind, with a 15% addition of Dryflex TPE there is an 160% increase in impact resistance, as measured to Charpy ISO 179 (type 1 test piece, notch A). In a virgin crystal polystyrene, a 25% addition of Dryflex TPE impact modifier gave over a 430% increase in impact resistance.

Biocomposite Cork Compounds

The main quantity of natural cork which is harvested today is used as pressed cork or mixed with PU or rubber. The processing of this kind of cork can be expensive and require a lot of energy. We have developed a special manufacturing method to combine natural cork with thermoplastic raw materials. Meaning Lifocork can be processed using typical thermoplastic processing methods such as injection moulding, extrusion or thermoforming.

Lifocork Biocomposite Cork Compounds

Cork - a renewable raw material

Cork is a natural product which comes from the bark of the cork oak tree. The removal of the bark does not harm the trees and the bark is only harvested after the first 20 years of growth. The removal stimulates a steady regeneration of the bark. Each cork tree provides on average 16 harvests over its 150-200 year lifespan.

Cork has a cell-like structure which is light and highly compressible. It is used in construction, sports, industrial and household applications.

Foamed Lifocork

It’s also possible to make foamed parts from Lifocork. This offers materials with very low densities (as low as 0.45 g/ccm) and therefore gives lightweight parts. The foamed Lifocork also gives a damping, shock absorbent effect, ideal for orthopaedic shoe lifts and inserts.

Processing

Lifocork can be processed using thermoplastic processing methods. In injection moulding it can be processed using standard equipment. Lifocork can also be processed in 2-component moulding. It has an excellent bond to TPE, PP and PE. Other processing methods include extrusion or thermoforming with a double belt press.

Typical Applications

Lifocork is suitable for a wide range of applications, with new ideas being introduced every day. Its comfortable feel and non-slip texture make it a good choice for handles and grips, where it has been used in sports equipment, tools and household items. Lifocork has also been used to manufacture bowls, trays, boxes and plant pots and toys.

In 2K applications, the material can be overmoulded or co-extruded onto TPE, PP or PE. Allowing for sophisticated designs and enhancing consumer appeal with the integration of a soft-touch area.

Plates, belts, endless tapes and tech profiles can be manufactured from Lifocork via the extrusion process. You also get a damping effect for orthopaedic shoe lifts by foaming Lifocork.

We offer coloured Lifocork compounds or it can be easily coloured using a standard PE masterbatch, opening up even more design possibilities.

Vitaprene // Lifoflex // Lifoprene

At HEXPOL TPE we want to make things easier, so we have carefully considered our product brands. We had several names for the same type of products, so we have restructured our TPE brands to create a more cohesive portfolio.

From January 2017, for new developments and projects we have consolidated the Dryflex, Lifoflex and Lifoprene product ranges under the DRYFLEX name. By using a single product name our aim is to bring a greater clarity and consistency to our customers.

Vitaprene is our legacy brand for extrusion grades. This was also consolidated under the Dryflex name.

These changes do not affect the Mediprene, Epseal, Lifolit, Lifobatch and Lifocork products.

High Quality, Custom Formulated soft PVC Compounds

Lifolit are a family of high-quality, soft polyvinyl chloride (PVC) compounds, custom formulated to your requirements. We’ve been developing PVC compounds since 1965 and continue to engineer new solutions to address current and emerging market demands.
Lifolit soft PVC

Non Phthalate and DEHP Free Grades

To address consumer concerns over the potential health and environmental risks of certain plasticizers used in the manufacture of PVC compounds, we have developed the Lifolit range to include several non phthalate alternatives.

This helps our customers to comply with tightening regulations governing the use of phthalates. Particularly in the toy and childcare market, where non phthalate compounds have become the industry standard in response to directives such as EU 2005/84/EC.

We work with a number of raw materials and plasticizers to give the best performance / cost ratio while always keeping in compliance with the different levels of phthalate use. This includes DEHP free PVC as well as grades that are considered low in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Foamed PVC

For footwear and shoe sole applications we have developed several grades of foamed Lifolit PVC. They are foamed up to a density of 0.65g/cm3. With extrusion processing densities up to 0.45g/cm3. We also offer grades with no chemical blowing agents which can be processed at temperatures up to 195°C. They also have a very fine cell structure.

Antistatic, Conductive & Flame Retardant Grades

The Lifolit range includes antistatic and conductive PVC grades. Designed to dissipate electrical charges where EMI or static buildup could cause interference. We also offer flame retardant PVC compounds which comply with RoHS regulations.

PVC Blends

By blending nitrile rubber (NBR) or other polymers, such as thermoplastic polyurethane, we have created PVC compounds with very elastic properties. Our PVC blends also allow us to modify very specific properties such as abrasion and chemical resistance.

TPE for Blow Moulding Applications

Mediprene BM is a range of thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) optimised for medical blow moulding applications. We have designed the Mediprene BM TPE compounds to have high melt strength, giving time to close the mould around the extruded parison while allowing sufficient stretchability during inflation. They also offer good welding in the pinchoff area of the blow mould. They can easily be coloured and give a smooth surface to the finished part.

Mediprene BM - Medical TPEs for Blow Moulding Applications

What is Blow Moulding?

Blow moulding is a manufacturing process that is used to produce hollow parts such as bottles, balloons and bags. The process begins with melting the TPE and forming it into a tube, called a parison. The parison is clamped into a divided mould, the tube is pinched at one end, welding it together and then air is blown into it. The air pressure inflates the TPE out to match the mould cavity. Once the TPE has cooled and hardened the mould opens and the part is ejected.

Applications

The TPE can be blow moulded into products with thin walls requiring a soft-touch feel with high levels of flexibility and durability.

Special Features

  • PVC, silicone and latex free
  • High melt strength
  • Excellent flexibility and stretchability
  • Soft-touch appeal
  • Different Shore A hardnesses available
  • Production site accredited to ISO 13485
